One of the outstanding composers of 16th-century Renaissance Italy, Palestrina is regarded as a supreme master of counterpoint~music in which two or more independent melodies are played at the same time in a way that sounds tuneful. Palestrina spent most of his career as maestro di capella (chorus master) in churches in Rome. He wrote hundreds of works, both religious and secular, most of which still exist. Palestrina survived three outbreaks of disease in Italy, but his wife and most of bis family died. Chorus masters were not well paid, but another marriage to a wealthy merchant, Virginia Dormoli, ensured that he  had enough money to continue composing.
